Obituary for Bliss M. Bushman
Bliss Bushman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Claremont, California went to be with his Lord on July 26th, 2018. Beloved husband of Mary, dear dad to Debi and Becky (predeceased), Papa of Emily and Timothy, and Father-in-law of Brian Starr.
Bliss was born in Provo, Utah, in 1924 to Bliss and Eva Bushman. He grew up in Albuquerque, NM and was the favorite brother to four sisters, Nadine, Colleen, Beverly and Joanne. He was captain of the Albuquerque High School football team. On his 18th birthday, he joined the US Army Aircorp. He was placed into a Meteorology program at Pomona College and was later stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador. Bliss spent three years in the Aircorp during WWII as a weatherman responsible for planning for air transportation and bombing raids in Europe. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. Upon returning home from the service, Bliss graduated from University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1948 with a degree in Engineering. At the university he was president of the student body, member and president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and met with his future wife Mary Gallagher. His professional life was in Aerospace Engineering. He worked for the Atomic Energy Commission at Sandia Labs where he was an project engineer in the nuclear bomb program. Mary and Bliss then moved to Los Angeles, California where he later he became a Senior Vice President for Perkin-Elmer and was responsible for such programs as the first Mass Spectrometer and the Hubble Telescope. Bliss and Mary worked and raised their family in Claremont, in southern California, before retiring to New Mexico and later Colorado to be closer to his daughters' family and grandchildren.
Mary and Bliss were avid travelers and had many adventures all over the world. In retirement Bliss was a docent at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History. Bliss also enjoyed fishing, and had many wonderful trips to northern New Mexico lakes.
Bliss is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Bushman; daughter Debi Starr and her husband Brian; grandchildren Emily and Timothy; and sisters Beverly McCune and Joanne Doxey.
A celebration of Bliss’ life will be held at the Vi Residence in Highlands Ranch on Saturday, August 4th, 2018 at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow.
