Obituary for Nancy J. Franco
Born on April 6, 1923 to Italian immigrants in New York City, Nancy Franco lived a long life of devotion to her Catholic faith and her family. She married John, an Air Force Lieutenant, in 1945. Their 63 years of marriage was accentuated by the births of their 4 children and family moves every 4 years from 1945-1972…Texas, Germany, Louisiana, Japan, Colorado, Virginia, Germany (again), Nebraska. Nancy settled for nothing less than being the best wife and mother she could. Family dinners around the dining room table happened nightly…nothing prepackaged or processed, fresh ingredients only, complete with dessert. To help stretch dollars, Nancy clipped coupons and sewed clothing for her daughters. She inspired her children to attend college and strive to be independent as well as self-sufficient.
Nancy was energetic and creative. She was an accomplished cook who enjoyed entertaining and sharing her cooking/kitchen tips. The beautiful hand stitching on the 40 sequined felt Christmas stockings she made for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren amounted to hundreds of hours of work. She added a loving touch to birthdays and holidays with her detailed, decorated cakes. She knitted dozens of slippers, afghans and trivets over the years. She made a ceramic nativity set complete with gold accents for each of her children.
Nancy was a “people person” who enjoyed time spent with friends and family. Her sense of humor was endearing. She was a gray lady hospital volunteer in her younger years. She bowled, golfed, and played bridge. A special delight was holding 13 cards and making her bridge bid…or setting her opponents.
Nancy’s “can do” attitude was a hallmark of her life. She courageously handled life’s ups and downs during the years John was on extended duty abroad and in Viet Nam. She was especially proud of moving tons of landscaping rocks for their front yard in her little VW Beetle!
She spent the past 2 ½ years at High Pointe Assisted Living where she was grateful for her friends and caregivers. Nancy passed away peacefully on February 15 at High Pointe. Her legacy of faith, strength, and family values is indelibly etched on our hearts. Nancy is survived by son John (Sally), daughters Nancy and Liz, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister Libby (Joe) and brother (Vincent), nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Nancy’s life will be on Friday, March 10, starting with a 10:30 Mass at Church of the Risen Christ Catholic Church, 3060 S. Monaco Parkway, Denver CO 80222, followed by lunch. Burial will be at Fort Logan.
