Obituary for Stephen M. "Steve" Sorensen
Steve, age 66, of Thornton, CO, passed away February 8, 2017. Steve was born in Bryn Mawr, PA to Niels Morris Sorensen and Barbara Ann Martin, September 29, 1950.
Steve graduated from Great Valley High School in Malvern, PA in 1968. He joined the US Air Force in 1969 and later served in Vietnam. Steve trained as an aircraft mechanic and worked mostly with C-123s. After the war, he was stationed at Peterson Field in Colorado Springs, CO and would make Colorado his home for the remainder of his life.
He was honorably discharged from the service in 1972 and joined the Colorado State Patrol in 1974. After his training, Steve was assigned to District 4, the Western slope region. He lived in Craig, CO for the next 29-years. While in Craig, Steve began working for Colowyo Coal Company where he worked until 2005.
Steve was a beloved family man who cared for his wife, children and grandchildren deeply. He was a master-of-all-trades and had many hobbies. He was a volunteer fireman, city councilman, self-taught craftsman and always a caretaker of others. He loved history and war movies, and was a tried and true Denver Broncos fan. Steve loved spending time traveling, with Montana and Hawaii being two of his favorite spots.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved Aunt Jane and Uncle Ralph Turner and Uncle Glenn Schroeder. He is survived by his wife Lynnette Stieb-Sorensen of Thornton, CO, his two daughters Niki (Tim) Lampe of Oak Harbor, WA and Melanie (Paul) Koschnitzke of Stamford, CT, his five grandchildren Benjamin, Kelsey, Hannah, Avery and Miles, his brother Kurt Sorensen of Craig, CO, his sister Debra Sorensen of Santa Barbara, CA and his ex-wife, Betty Wilson of Tigard, OR.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 17 at 3:00 PM sharp (staging area "A" at 2:45 PM) at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO. A ‘Bronco-themed’ Celebration of Life will follow at 5:30 PM at Northglenn Recreation Center located at 11801 Community Center Drive, Northglenn, CO. Honor Steve by wearing your favorite Broncos attire or Aloha shirt.
