Helen Campbell Monson

Birth date: May 8, 1914
Death date: May 20, 2012

Monson, Helen Campbell, our beloved Mother, passed away peacefully in her home early Sunday morning, May 20, 2012 at the age of 98. Helen was born in Providence, Utah, May 8, 1914, to Lucy Lorena Pickett and Ezra Taft Campbell. At 19 she moved to Salt Lake City to attend nursing school at LDS Hospital, where she graduated in 1936 and became Head of Nursing at the hospital. During her schooling she met Kenneth Lawrence Monson, and they were married June 24, 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After living four years in Salt Lake, Denver became her permanent home when Ken's work took them there in 1942. Her posterity includes 11 children, 55 grandchildren, 163 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

One of her special talents was expressing her love of language, particularly through her rhymes. Many were words of encouragement to specific individuals for their successes or struggles, but all demonstrated her keen sense of humor, her positive outlook on life, and her love for our Savior, Jesus Christ. Over 400 of her musings have been printed in a wonderful book compiled and published by her daughter Pamela and her husband E J Passey, and given to each of her posterity. Music was also an important element in her home, and she created beautiful melodies for many of her poems, writing the winner in the 1970 Relief Society song contest. She was a friend to all and has become well-known for her large collection of playful sunglasses, sporting a different pair on each outing, creating instant connections with those she met.

When Helen became a mother, she devoted her time to her husband and family, and her delicious homemade bread was a constant in our lives. She faithfully served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as stake Primary president, Relief Society president, teacher, organist, missionary to Argentina with her husband, and Denver Temple ordinance worker.

She is survived by her children: Marcia (Rey) Koster, Alan (Jeanette), Claire (Earl) Elmont, Ralph (Yvonne), Marjorie (Jess) Tweeddale, Harold (Jackie), Scott (Susan), Gini, Lee (Julie), and Jill (Bill) Maxfield and nearly 300 descendants. She was preceded in death by her husband Ken and daughters Helen and Pamela (EJ) Passey.

The family is appreciative of the services of Legacy Hospice.
