Obituary for Alden E. Clawson
Alden Clawson, departed this earth unexpectedly on February 21 2021 to be reunited with his beautiful wife Dian. Alden was larger than life, he cared deeply for all of god’s children. Alden was born on June 4th, 1934 in Seattle Washington. He was the eldest child of Alden Leo Clawson and Katherine Cowley. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah when he was a young boy. At the age of six Alden contracted Polio and was hospitalized and spent several weeks in an iron lung machine to assist his breathing. He learned to swim as part of his recovery and became a competitive swimmer as a result. Alden graduated from Granite High School in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1952.
Alden married the love of his life Dian Ball on March 21st 1959. They spent the best 55 years of their lives together. Alden was an alumni of the University of Utah where he graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1960 and an MBA in 1962.
Alden and Dian started a family and were blessed with three boys, Jeffrey, Stephen and Bradley. They moved their family to Colorado in 1963 and lived out their lives at their home in Cherry Knolls.
Alden worked at Lockeed Martin for 35 years as an Engineer, and was involved in many of the space missions for NASA including the Apollo Missions, Sky Lab and Viking Missions. He was highly regarded, and received many awards and accolades for his work.
Alden instilled the love of the outdoors to his children, and subsequently to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of his greatest passions was skiing. After moving to Colorado, he was a part of the National Ski Patrol in Vail Colorado for 12 years. Some of the family's fondest memories were realized during this time.
Alden was also very involved with the Boy Scouts of America. He was very proud to be an eagle scout as a youth. As an adult, Alden was Scoutmaster for troop 555 and led the young men of the troop on many adventures. He enjoyed camping trips, backpacking, fishing and other scouting activities. He loved being a Scout Leader and sharing his passion for the outdoors with his troop and other Scout Leaders.
In 1988 he received Scouting's highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award. This award was given to volunteer leaders in recognition of their distinguished service. For Alden, this included establishing Ski Olympics, a Scout Master Training Course for the Arapahoe district, and subsequently the Arapahoe district training chairman.
Alden was a man of great faith. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he had many callings. He was devoted to the service of others and continues to be an inspiration for all. Among his many callings, he cherished his time as a Senior Missionary Couple together with his wife Dian for the Denver South Mission. He was also a dedicated temple worker at the Denver Temple from its opening in 1986.
Alden will be missed greatly but he will always be in our hearts.
Alden was preceded in death by his wife Dian, he is survived by his brother Millen Clawson, sister Christeen Pratt, children Jeffrey Clawson, Stephen Clawson, Bradley Clawson and 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
