GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Alvera Fern Knobel was born on September 8th, 1928, on a farm 9 miles north of Fairbury, Nebraska to Ralph Knobel and Bernice Hummel Knobel. One brother was born five years later, named Ralph Junior Knobel. Alvera was baptized, confirmed, and later married at Immanual Lutheran Church, a rural church in Daykin, Nebraska.
Alvera attended a one-room rural school 1-1/4 miles south of home. She graduated from Fairbury High School in 1945 and taught in rural schools for 6 years.
She married Elton Nelson on June 14th, 1949. Alvera’s love for travel began with the year they spent in England when Elton was stationed with the Nebraska National Guard. In 1952, they moved to Long Beach, California and welcomed Gloria into the world in 1953 and then Diane in 1955. The family moved to Littleton, Colorado in 1960, when Elton accepted an engineering position with Martin Marietta Aircraft. She and Elton divorced in 1963. Having been a housewife, Alvera went to school at night to learn secretarial skills and over the years, worked herself up to become an accountant.
Alvera married Melvin (Keith) Sturgeon on March 7th, 1970. Alvera and Keith enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and spending time with their friends. In 1994, she retired from PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association). After Keith died in 1997, Alvera expanded her horizons to travel the world. She enjoyed 8 cruises, 2 trips to Russia, 2 trips to Hawaii, several trips to Europe, and one trip to China. She embarked on several cross-country driving, bus, and train trips to continue to explore the United States.
Alvera leaves behind her two daughters, Gloria (and Scott) Scharton and Diane (and Brian) Busch; three granddaughters, Tancy (and Anthony) Hall, Carrie (and Lucas) Willoughby, and Catherine Busch; and four great grandchildren, Robert S. Scharton, Guyden Hall, Alice and Betty Willoughby. Preceding her in death are her husband, Keith Sturgeon, her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph Junior and Martha Knobel, and her grandson, Robert A. Scharton. In addition, she leaves behind a host of precious friends, too numerous to mention.
