Obituary for Concetta Martha Rokita
Rokita, Concetta Martha, age 88 of Colorado Springs. Concetta M. Rokita (Sansone), beloved and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully the evening of June 16th, 2014 in hospice care surrounded by her husband and children. Connie was born November 13th, 1925 in Maplewood, NJ to Catherine (Schoenleber) and Daniel Sansone, the firstborn of five children. Connie graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, class of 1943, and was employed by the Lord & Taylor department store in Millburn, NJ. She enjoyed going to the Adams Theater in Newark with her girlfriends and cousins where they would dance in the aisles to the Big Band sounds of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra. She married Thomas J. Rokita of Union, NJ in 1955, celebrating their 59th wedding anniversary on June 12, 2014. Connie and Tom were longtime residents of Iselin, NJ before moving to Colorado Springs, CO in 2013 to be with their children. Connie was a full-time mother for 17 years and after raising her family she was employed by the Woodbridge Township Board of Education for 28 years as a school aide at School #18. She had a love for sports and she loved attending N.Y. Mets baseball games at Shea Stadium with her children and their friends. On one occasion, she sprained her ankle before the start of the game and was brought to the Mets dugout and treated in the team clubhouse by the Mets team doctor. As her children married she enjoyed her time visiting them and attending her grandchildren’s school events. During their long retirement, Connie and Tom traveled throughout the U.S. in their minivan each summer, selecting two of their seven grandchildren to join them each year. They also visited their son and his family while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force in Hampton (VA), Panama City (FL), Tucson (AZ) and Okinawa, Japan. As a devoted mother and grandmother, she would travel anywhere to celebrate special occasions and milestones in her children’s lives, such as baptisms, first communions, confirmations, graduations, and holidays. Mom always kept her children and grandchildren happy and laughing; she was the source of much enjoyment, good cheer, and pleasure. Her stories and witticisms added flavor and zest to life leaving a legacy of family expressions and fond reminiscence that will be long remembered. Connie is survived by her husband Tom; her children Thomas J. Rokita Jr. of Colorado Springs, Christina & Robert Mehler of Longmont, CO, and Carol & Robert Burns of Monument, CO; her grandchildren Thomas, Cassandra, and Isabel Rokita, Jennifer and Christina Mehler, and Robert and Kenneth Burns; her sister Marie Neander of Whippany, NJ, and many favorite nieces and nephews. Connie is preceded in death by her parents Catherine & Daniel, brothers Alfonse and Daniel Sansone, and her sister Katherine Vollmuth.
