Obituary for David Michael Lyons
Lt. Col. David Michael Shotts Lyons, USAF retired, age 74, a U.S. Air Force and Vietnam War combat pilot, passed away peacefully at his home in Monument, CO on Monday, Aug. 9, 2021. Michael was born on March 6, 1947 in Greensburg, PA to Kenneth James Lyons and Jane May Shotts Lyons. He graduated from Williamsport High School, then went on to graduate from the United States Air Force Academy in the Class of 1970 as the Distinguished Graduate in Mathematics. He graduated from the University of North Carolina earning Master and Doctorate Degrees in Applied Mathematics. Michael was an assistant department head and professor in the Department of Mathematics at the USAF Academy, then a senior technical analyst for the MITRE Corporation.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 45 years, Margaret “Peggy” Murray Lyons; his sister, Rebecca Jane Lyons of Harrisburg, PA; his 2 children and their spouses Jennifer Lyons Kretsinger of Eagle River, AK and Timothy Michael Lyons of Redding, CA; and 5 grandchildren, Cole, Jedd, Gus, Penelope, and Evie. Michael’s parents and his sister, Nancy Lyons Dorwart, preceded him in death.
Funeral and Burial Services are Monday, 23 August 2021 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 Jefferson Street, Monument, CO. The Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am and 10:00am. Celebration of Michael’s Life, Reception at 11:00am. Burial at the United States Air Force Academy at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
