Donna and her twin sister Mary were born September 6, 1937 in Colusa, California to Warren and Josephine Davison. Donna was raised in Livermore, California. She attended Colorado Woman’s College where she met her first husband and father of her three daughters, Jack Gooch, whom she married in 1958. Donna also attended San Jose State University before moving to Colorado and finishing her degree in education at the University of Denver. While raising her daughters, Donna was a substitute teacher. After the birth of her youngest daughter, Donna attended nursing school at Arapahoe Community College where she received her nursing degree in 1971. Donna worked as an operating room and day surgery RN at several hospitals in the Denver area until her retirement. In her many roles as a nurse, Donna was recognized for her knowledge, flexibility and reliability.

In 1980 Donna married Karl Bernklau. They settled in Littleton and have been active members of the community since then. Throughout her life, Donna was a committed community and church volunteer. She was a 60-year member of P.E.O., a Philanthropic Education Organization which supports women’s education. She was an active member of St. James Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, Stephen’s Minister and Parish Nurse. Other groups and organizations who have benefited from Donna’s generous volunteer spirit include Friends of Nursing (FON), the Downtown Aquarium, where she dedicated over 1550 volunteer hours, 9News Health Fair, Littleton Historical Society and the Littleton Bemis Library, Most recently, after completing the Citizen’s Academy, she spent many dedicated hours volunteering for the Littleton Police Department where she was recognized for her exceptionally dedicated service to the Littleton Police Department in face of personal challenges.

She also enjoyed entertaining guests in their home, hosting many overnight guests as part of the P.E.O. Bed & Breakfast program to benefit the organization. Donna was an avid bridge player and member of multiple bridge groups and was part of the Under the Covers Book Club. While relaxing at home, and in the eighteen months following her kidney cancer diagnosis, Donna could often be found solving the daily crossword puzzle or fitting together jig saw puzzles.
