Obituary for Dorothy (Zandstra) Cortvriendt
Dorothy Hansen (Zandstra) Cortvriendt

After a long and meaningful life, our cherished mother, grandmother, great and great`
-great grandmother, aunt and friend died on April 28, 2020.

Born on May 11, 1922 in Blair, Nebraska she was the third of four children. After graduation, she moved to Denver with her sister and two friends just as World War II was beginning. She found a job at Gates Rubber Company where she worked until retirement.

She married Edward Zandstra in 1942 and had five children who she ended up raising as a single mother. Each of her children watched her handle many obstacles and challenges with courage and fortitude while always being an amazing parent. All five grew up possessing the self-reliance, confidence, honesty, love for family and the capacity for hard work that they learned from a mother who was dedicated to each of them. She rejoiced in the birth of each of her 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. At her 97th birthday celebration, her family and friends shared memories of holidays, sleepovers and the fun they had at her homes and the Lookout Mountain cabin.

She married Raymond Cortvriendt in 1970; they enjoyed traveling through the states, Canada and Europe. He died in 1984. In her remaining 34 years, she moved from their home in Parker, to a home and garden in Lakewood, then a townhouse in Littleton before making the choice by herself to move to Golden Pond Assisted Living in 2011. Her family is grateful for the care she received at Golden Pond and most recently at Lutheran Hospice.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Linda Smith (Dave), her son Fred Zandstra (Dorothy Senti), and special son-in-law, Ken DeVries. Her saddest times were experienced when as a mother, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna (Robert Howell), son, Wayne Zandstra and daughter, Susan (Ken DeVries).

Her brothers, Albert (Bud) and Lyle Hansen and her sister Marjorie Daniel also pre-deceased her.

Memories of Dorothy will not only be treasured by her immediate family, but by the many childhood friends and relatives who were touched by her.

Her long life is to be continually celebrated. She was loved and admired by all her family including nieces, nephews and friends. Her legacy will live on in all the good we continue to do.

For those who wish, you may make a donation to Lutheran Hospice, 3210 Lutheran Parkway, Building 20, Wheat ridge, Colorado 80033 in Dorothy’s name.
