Obituary for Edgar Ray Fillmore

Edgar Ray Fillmore died unexpectedly from a severe stroke on May 1, 2023, just weeks before his 80th birthday. Edgar will be deeply missed by his large family and huge circle of friends that he collected through his life. He easily turned strangers into friends with his sincere love and concern for all he met. He invited anyone to call him “Uncle Ed” as he felt we are all one big family, all children of God.

Ed was born on May 18, 1943 to Elmer and Gwendolyn Fillmore, the fourth of seven children, in Spanish Fork, Utah. He was raised on a farm which fostered in him a deep appreciation for God’s creations and also for hard work. His passion for gardening and for being resourceful and industrious continued throughout his life. He loved participating in the Boy Scout program as a young boy earning countless merit badges, and later as an adult leader teaching life skills to scouts.

Ed was a man of faith, committed to living a life pleasing to his Father in Heaven. As a young man he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in northern Germany. This began his love of language learning that led to proficiency in a number of foreign languages and the ability to say “hello” in over one hundred.

A thirst for knowledge led Ed to devote much time to formal education after he left home. He first attended Snow College in Ephraim, Utah earning recognition for being the top chemistry student. He later transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he focused on German and Russian in his undergraduate studies, and Recreation and Resource Management in a master’s program. He then earned a PhD in Recreation Management from Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. He began his career as a college professor, and later switched fields and spent many years as a technical writer.

Between his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Ed moved to Washington DC to work for the Library of Congress in the German department. It was there in the nation’s capital where he met the love of his life, Judith Lowe. They were married on August 13, 1970 and over the next 17 years welcomed first five daughters and then three sons. His family brought him the greatest joy, as he devoted countless hours with his children playing word and rhyming games, teaching home improvement skills, building fires, identifying plant species, reading scripture, and telling them how much he loved them.

Ed lived a life of service, serving two more church missions with his wife in their retirement years: one in the Washington DC temple, and one in the Freiberg Germany temple. He faithfully loved and served others in his church, community and neighborhood throughout his life. He was fascinated by all peoples and cultures and was genuinely interested in anything anyone could teach him. Uncle Ed loved words and puns and riddles and was quick with a joke for any occasion. He had hundreds stored in his personal mental database. His kind, fun-loving nature and ability to easily connect with people endeared him to all who knew him.

Ed was preceded in death by one daughter, Melayna Fillmore, and one grandson, Dexter Dahle. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, his children Mirien (and Brian) Church, Meredith (and Patrick) McKinnon, Marliese (and Tom) Ransom, Monette (and Aaron) Dahle, Milan (and Rachael) Fillmore, Mitchell (and Erin) Fillmore, Morgan (and Ashley) Fillmore, his 33 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 6 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 4701 S Chambers Rd, Aurora, CO. The family will be receiving condolences beginning at 10:0 AM, followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Littleton Cemetery.
