Obituary for Frank Frederick Spiecker
Spiecker, Frank Frederick, age 82 of Littleton. Frank passed away on Sept. 15, 2014, at the age of 82, in Littleton, Colorado, after a lengthy illness. Frank was born on June 20, 1932, in Wayne, Nebraska, to Carl and Frieda Spiecker. Frank often spoke fondly of his Midwest childhood growing up with his younger brother, John Spiecker. After graduating from high school in Winner, South Dakota, in 1949, Frank attended the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In 1955, he graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Law School. Following law school, Frank moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he later met the love of his life, Marlene Miller. They married on August 8, 1958. Frank spent over 50 years in Grand Junction where he and Marlene raised their three children, Kathryn, Karyn, and Karl. He taught them the important things by his example: hard work, civic responsibility, generosity, keeping a well-washed and tidy car, and the comedic flair and timing necessary for telling a joke well. Frank practiced law for over 40 years, including 25 years as a prosecutor. He was a founding partner of the law firm Spiecker, Hanlon, Gormley, and Volkmann. In 1964, he became the first elected District Attorney for the newly created 21st Judicial District. He joked that he handily beat his opponent in 1968; he ran unopposed. He was a member of the Grand Junction Lions Club throughout his years in the community. In 2008, Frank moved to the Colorado Front Range area to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Frank was full of life and will be remembered for his gregarious laugh, bright blue eyes, silver-white hair, his propensity for telling stories (many of them true) and playing pranks. Frank was a history and genealogy buff who traveled extensively throughout the world to experience new things. He enjoyed swimming, fishing, skiing, yard work, and tinkering in his workshop and garage. He was particularly proud of his work in the 1970s restoring his grandfather's 1901 Oldsmobile to its original condition. He rarely missed the opportunity to drive local dignitaries in it for Grand Junction's numerous parades. He was a kind man who appreciated socializing with his numerous lifelong friends. As a charter member of the Bookcliff Country Club, he treasured his daily summer afternoon trips to the swimming pool. He had a love for the finer things in life, which in his case included slowly 'dragging Main Street' while licking a cone from Dairy Queen, and his Saturday night ritual of Hee Haw and The Lawrence Welk Show. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene, and his parents Carl V. and Frieda E. Spiecker. He is survived by his brother John (Elaine) and niece Nancy Spiecker of Walnut Creek, CA; his three children Kathryn Landry (Gary) of Carson City, NV; Karyn Downs (Bob) of Littleton, CO; and Karl Spiecker (Lisa) of Colorado Springs, CO; and seven grandchildren: Kendra Ruth, Karla Ruth, Colin Downs, Shelby Downs, Austin Spiecker, Alexander Spiecker, and Audrey Spiecker.
