Obituary for Gary Joe Heaslet
Heaslet, Gary Joe, age 67, was born in Denver on December 09, 1945 and raised in Englewood, Colorado. Gary was the son of Joseph and Iola Heaslet, brother to Shirley, Donna, and Sharon, husband to JoCarol, father to Jared and Stephanie, father-in-law to Lisa, and loving grandfather to Tierney, Jenay, and Alyssa. A committed husband, Gary was married to JoCarol for over 47 years. His love for her was evident in the way he kept her close to himself, insured her needs were covered in the event something happened to him, and demonstrated a desire to serve her. He wanted JoCarol to be by his side and he was proud of her strength and her beauty, both inside and out. The same characteristics shown to JoCarol were also evident in Gary’s relationship with both of his children. He was always willing to lend support and guidance to Jared and Stephanie. Perhaps the best example of this love showed itself when Stephanie, who passed away in February of 2013, was undergoing cancer treatment and needed extra attention. Gary sacrificed time with JoCarol on a regular basis and he made sure all of Stephanie’s needs were met. It was always known that Gary would give his children the shirt off of his back. An avid outdoorsman, Gary loved fishing, boating, hunting, flying, four-wheeling, and camping. As an adolescent, he spent much time hunting and trapping animals. His passion for “the hunt” never left him, and he desired to be outdoors until his last day of life. This love led him to live and work in the mountains for most of his adult life. Those closest to him often remarked at how Gary would have done just fine if he were born in the 1800s. Having been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in late 2012, Gary fought through several rounds of chemotherapy, a major lung blockage, and a bone marrow transplant, all in an effort to live the kind of life he wanted to live. Sadly, although the bone marrow cells were starting to grow, Gary’s lungs were not functioning properly and this slowly led to his death. He will long be remembered as a man of great strength, courage, and willingness to fight for the things he cherished most.
