Obituary for George J. Langdon
Langdon, George J., a Colorado native at heart, was actually born June 18, 1924 in McCook, Nebraska only because his parents were visiting family there. He grew up in North Denver attending Saint Catherine of Sienna and Holy Family Elementary schools and graduated from Holy Family High School in 1942. He attended Regis College until he entered the Army in 1943. While in the Army, George served as a Chaplain’s Assistant for Catholic Chaplain Bernard Cramer. He served in the European Theatre, earning three Battle Stars for Battles at Normandy, Ardennes, and Northern France and an Invasion Arrow Head. Returning from the war, George married Lucille King in 1947. They had four children Michael, Frances, Dennis, and Louis. George was in the candy, food, and beverage vending industry for nearly 60 years. He bought his first vending machine in 1948 and was the first vendor to operate cold milk machines on a military base. He sold the first vending company and opened the first Orange Julius in Wheat Ridge in 1957. He continued in the vending industry with Automatic Catering and later was Operations Manager for ARA. He started G&S Vending in 1968 and continued in that business with his sons Dennis and Louis until his retirement in 2005. George enjoyed time with his family in the mountains, fishing and hunting and relaxing at the cabin. He was involved in many civic organizations including the Wheat Ridge Optimist Club and was President of the Colorado Vending Council. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Josephine, brothers John, Leo, James, and Richard and sisters, Sister Rose Margaret, CPPS and Patricia. He is survived by his wife, Lucille, sons Michael (Heidi), Dennis (Sandy), Louis (Linda) and daughter, Frances; grandchildren, Michelle Zethren (Dan), Lynneah Langdon, Brian Langdon (Melissa), Jennifer Downing (Will), Jonathan Langdon (Rachel), Melissa Bass (Ben) and Matthew Langdon (Shannon); and great-grandchildren, Dylan, Emma, Bryce, and Parker Langdon and Collin, Cayden and Paityn Downing.
