Obituary for George W. Smith, Jr.
George W Smith, Jr. of Highlands Ranch, passed away September 20, 2019. He was born and raised in Raleigh/Durham North Carolina to George and Marguerite Smith. His wife, Caroline, preceded him death in 2013. He is survived by his daughter Marguerite (Sam) Amer, and his son Wallace (Lynn) Smith, and grandchildren Geordy, Haley, and William.
George was a devoted husband to Caroline. They enjoyed musical theater, flying, and were involved and found friendship in civic organizations including Garden club, Newcomers’ club, and the Highlands Ranch Historical Society. Caroline maintained their membership and involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution (Caroline) and the Mayflower Society (George).
As a youth, George was active in the Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout rank. He often spoke of his time leading scouts through the Great Smoky Mountains.
While George’s term of service in the military (Army) at the end of the Korean Conflict was brief , his love of country ran very deep. He recognized the unique history and position of the United States and strongly supported the Constitution of the Republic.
George was an Electrical Engineer and worked his entire career for Bell Telephone Laboratories. That career was a great source of pride to him as Bell Labs helped engineer the communication infrastructure of the country. Capstone projects with which he was involved included the communications system for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and the ATT Pavilion at the Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida.
George loved to read, preferring books on history, science, and spy and military novels by Ludlum and Clancy. He looked forward to the books his daughter, Marguerite, would send on special occasions or just as a thoughtful gift.
As a devoted grandfather, George would regularly be seen sitting with Caroline watching his granddaughter’s musicals and recitals or his grandsons’ baseball games. He will be missed.
