Obituary for Helen Marie McIntire
McIntire, Helen Marie was born on May 21, 1921, in Owensboro, Kentucky. Helen was the oldest of four children; her sister, Regina and two brothers, Earl and Art Dickens. She lived on a tobacco farm as a child. Helen was 12 when her parents died within one week of each other. When Helen’s mom was hospitalized with Tuberculosis, her father endured many trips by foot in the snow to check on his wife. He developed pneumonia and died. Losing both parents at one time proved difficult for the children. All four children lived with their grandmother for a time, then moved to Indiana to live with an aunt and uncle. As teens, the four children were once again moved to Canon City, Colorado. Here they lived, grew up and started families of their own. Helen met Garland McIntire in Canon City where he worked on a ranch. Shortly after meeting one another, Garland joined the Marines as WWII was starting and he was sent to the Philippines. Helen joined the Women’s Army Auxillary Corp (W.A.A.C.) as the war started. When Garland was at home on leave they were married in Golden, Colorado on January 17, 1943. After Garland’s discharge from the Marines, they moved to Denver where they bought property and built their first home in 1952. Helen enjoyed being a stay at home mom to sons Jerry and Darrell. The boys kept her very busy as they were in Scouts and both had paper routes which Helen helped them with snowy days. Garland worked as a truck driver and in the early 70’s retired. They moved back to Canon City because of Garland’s health. They resided there until Garland passed away in 1988. Helen moved into the Courtyard Senior Residence in March of 1989. Here Helen resided for 23 years becoming the longest resident there. She enjoyed doing crafts, her needle work and enjoyed playing and calling bingo. In May of 2011, her health declined and moved to the Bear Creek Care and Rehab where she has resided. Helen is survived by her sons Jerry (Cheri) and Darrell (Cookie). She is survived by on brother Earl Dickens of Canon City and her sister, Regina Aden of Union, Missouri. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Dynell, Dynette, Carrie and Kelly as well as six great-grandchildren, Collin, Colby, Lainey, Aiden, Grace, and Chase, all who put a smile on Helen’s face.
