Obituary for John J. Doyle
John J. Doyle of Colorado Springs, CO.
Lt. Col. John Joseph Doyle, USAF, Retired, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2020 at the age of 91. John was born in Bristol, PA to John Joseph and Alice Poyser Doyle on February 21, 1929. After graduating from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD, he joined the Air Force and become a navigator. He completed pilot training and became a fighter pilot. John completed 100 missions as part of the elite Wild Weasel operation flying the F-105 Thunderchief in the Vietnam War. John also flew the F4 Phantom prior to Vietnam and the F-106 while stationed in Dover, DE. During his career in the Air Force, in 1956 he met his wife Joy Schneider. They were married July 27th, 1957 in Winter Haven, FL. He and Joy had six children, Mary, John (deceased), Michael, Kathy, Theresa, and David. John is also survived by his brother, Larry Doyle and sister, Patricia Doyle as well as by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
John retired from the Air Force as a highly decorated fighter pilot in 1974 and moved to Columbia, SC to continue raising his family. In 1991 he fulfilled a lifelong dream to make Colorado Springs his home. For nearly thirty years, he enjoyed the view of Pikes Peak, close proximity to the Air Force Academy, and many opportunities to enjoy the snow by sledding with his grandchildren. John was a faithful member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument, CO and was very involved in the Knights of Columbus.
John’s life will be celebrated at St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument, CO on Wednesday June 17, 2020. Visitation is at 10 AM followed by a Rosary at 10:30 AM and a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Arrangements are being handled by Ellis Family Services in Littleton, CO.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument, CO in John’s name.
