Obituary for Loren Nelson Skundberg
Skundberg, Loren Nelson, age 75 of Littleton. Loren Skundberg was born June 24, 1938, and passed away in Littleton on October 31, 2013, at the age of 75. Loren was born to Clifford and Alice Skunberg in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife Billie, daughter Holly (Jim) Smith of Centennial, Colorado, son Steve Skundberg of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, granddaughter Carly (Nathan) Bagley of Englewood, Colorado as well as two sisters Darlene (Jim) Moore of Fargo, North Dakota and Sharon (Dick) Teberg of Moorhead, Minnesota, and a brother Wesley (JoAnn) Skunberg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, where he eventually met the love of his life, Billie Sue Hurst. Loren graduated high school in 1956, joined the United States Air Force, attended basic training at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas and then was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. During his first leave he went to Kansas and married Billie. They were married on February 1, 1957. During Loren’s time in the service they moved around the country. While stationed near Crosby, North Dakota, he and Billie had their first child, Holly Deniece Skundberg in 1958. In 1960, they moved to Denver, Colorado. Loren then took a job with Martin Marietta. In 1965, Loren and Billie had their second child, Steven Christopher Skundberg. They made their home in Colorado until 1991. Over the years they experienced a great life together. Loren walked Holly down the aisle as she married James Patrick Smith. In 1982, Loren’s granddaughter, Carly Rene Smith was born and from that day forward he was affectionately known as “Papa”. Loren was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1980 and was able to take disability from Martin Marietta after 31 years of service. At that time he and Billie wanted a warmer climate, so they packed up and moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona. Soon afterwards they returned to their roots and had a home built on South Lida lake in Pelican Rapids. Loren became a certified steam engineer and spent much of his time working on steam tractors, and helping restore a steam driven carousel in Rollag, Minnesota. For several years they would travel back and forth between Sun Lakes and Pelican Rapids. In 2002, both, Loren and Billie knew they belonged back in Colorado. Once they returned, they settled down in Littleton to be with their family. Loren enjoyed collecting about 300 scale model tractors. He also collected HO gauge trains and built a scale model railroad in the basement of their Littleton home. Over the years Loren had many great pleasures including dancing with his granddaughter at her wedding to Nathan Grae Bagley, watching his daughter Holly, run a successful business, harvesting a bull elk with his son-in-law Jim, and witnessing his son Steve, promoted to Sergeant at the Littleton Police Department. Loren lived a full and loving life and his family and friends will miss him greatly and will always have him in their hearts.
