Anthony, Mary Elizabeth was the only child born to Jacob Edward Ucker and Hazel Mary Collins Ucker on January 31, 1921 in Kansas City, MO. She entered into glory on February 11, 2014 at the age of 93. A tenacious fighter, she was compelled by love. To survive the great depression, her mom ironed and did seamstress work, and her father raised vegetables and sold them off his truck. She often fondly recalled spending time with her dad on their acreage. She attended a Catholic grade school and high school. She graduated from Saint Catherine's University in Saint Paul, Minnesota with a degree in library science with a specialty in children's literature. She worked as a librarian for many years, most notably at the University of Notre Dame. She loved the campus and the faculty, as well as the proud traditions. It was during that time that she met her roommate's brother - a dashing six foot eight young buck just back from the war named Harold Vincent Anthony. He became her beloved spouse on September 3, 1949. When they married, she was welcomed into the Anthony family with open arms. An only child, she delighted in getting to know all of the big Anthony family (Harold was the youngest of eight children) and was well loved in return. Harold and Betty (as she was known) had four children they loved dearly. They sacrificed to send their children to Catholic school and bought a cabin- where weekends and summers were spent keeping the youngsters healthy and full of the wonder of God's great outdoors. She cared for her husband, children and numerous animals. She knew the mountain roads so well that she earned the name 'lead foot grandma' and would drive up to Dome Rock cabin then down to Littleton to water and mow the grass, only to come back up again. She handled baby bunnies, a stray pregnant kitty, mountain lions, big horn sheep, bats, and -with the help of her brave son Michael- a rattlesnake after the bunnies. She was an extrovert at heart and loved parties and visits from family and friends. In her later years, her girlfriends would join her for tea parties on her birthday- complete with her fancy red hat. Betty was also a woman of great courage. She was the primary caregiver for her husband when his health declined and left him bed-bound for several years. She was in a care center herself when she lost him. She bravely got better and came home. She loved life and chose to be joyful and cheerful. She loved to learn, even in her later years. She used her Kindle constantly and was a voracious reader. She kept up on the daily news, current events, daily mass and played computer chess to keep her mind sharp. She woke each morning thanking God for the sunshine, and checking to see if her indoor tomato plant had any new ripe cherry tomatoes. She chose to spend the years after she lost her husband growing in understanding about God, and learning of His love for her. She prayed daily for her children, grandchildren and great grandchild, as well as many others. She would frequently have a burden to pray for someone in particular, and often found there was a need for those prayers later. She is preceded in death by her husband Harold and oldest daughter Jackie. She is survived by her three children Mary Ann White, Melvin Michael Anthony, and Susan Lorraine Montgomery. Two grandchildren, Katrina Maria White, and Olin Jacob White, And one great grandchild in utero.
