Obituary for Michael Flynn Redfearn
Michael (Mike) Flynn Redfearn, 64, passed away on November 3, 2017 at Littleton Adventist Hospital in Littleton, CO surrounded by loved ones. Mike is preceded in death by his father Donald Flynn Redfearn and his mother Joyce Anne Redfearn (Simpson).
Mike was born in Anna, IL on July 27, 1953. The oldest of four children, Mike was a leader not only in his home, but also in his community. At 14 years old, Mike was assigned a leadership position within the youth program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ward he attended. He was mainly in charge of parties and social gatherings for his peers. This love of social gatherings followed Mike throughout his life. Mike played football for Herrin High School located in Herrin, IL. During his tenure with the fighting tigers, the team won the 1971 state championship, an achievement of which Mike was very proud. Mike was also very involved with the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. At 18 years old, Mike became a scoutmaster and helped other boys pursue their love of the outdoors.
Toward the end of his senior year of high school, Mike was having fun at a local club for teens called Teen Town. On yearbook night, he met his future wife Karen Lynn Owens. Mike attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. He earned a Bachelor of Science. After his freshman year, Karen and Mike married in West Frankfort, IL on September 1, 1972. Faith and dedication to God led Mike and Karen to be sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington, D.C. Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 30, 1975. What started as a family of two, eventually ballooned to a family of nine as six sons and one daughter joined the family between 1974 and 1986.
Mike’s love of parties led him to opening Party Palace located in Cape Girardeau, MO, a holiday and party store. Mike developed an amazing talent for balloon sculptures that he used anytime when given the opportunity. His balloon art made many social events memorable. Every holiday was an event in the Redfearn household, but the two celebrations that stood out were Halloween and Christmas. Mike was known for his elaborate yard displays that would excite his grandchildren at the yearly Halloween and Christmas parties.
Mike is survived by his wife Karen Lynn Redfearn (Owens), his seven children and their spouses (Christopher/Jennifer, Ryan/Michelle, Aaron/Karla, Trent/Courtney, Ross/Kristal, Ashleigh/Joel, Nicholas/Emily), his 21 grandchildren, and his three siblings (Mark, Matthew, Melodie).
Viewing will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m., November 7, 2017 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1939 E. Easter Ave., Centennial, CO 80122. Funeral services will follow from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Interment will be at Littleton Cemetery.
Mike’s motto in life was “You do what you gotta do.” His dedication to responsibility and excellence set the example for his children and grandchildren. Every morning when he dropped his kids off at school, he always said, “Now, go get some smarts in your head.” His legacy will long endure and we are all the smarter for it.
