Obituary for Michelene "Micci" Renee Woodcock Burling

Michelene “Micci” Burling died following a long illness on March 19, 2024, at home surrounded by her family in Monument, Colorado. She was born in Ottumwa, IA, on September 7, 1955, to Robert Woodcock and Mary Reynolds Woodcock.

Micci grew up in Albia, IA, and graduated in 1973 from Albia High School, where she was an outstanding athlete in basketball, golf and tennis. Following graduation, she attended Central College in Pella, IA, where her roommate, Julie Burling Kirk introduced her to her future husband, James (Jim) R. Burling, Jr. One of her college highlights was attending a semester abroad in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico.

Micci had a wide variety of passions. She passed her love of sports to her three children, traveling from coast to coast, and internationally, to watch their soccer and volleyball games. She volunteered with Mill Dog Rescue, welcoming numerous 4-legged friends to her own family. Micci was a fixture as Office Manager at Colvin and Tao Dentistry for 27 years, where her interaction with the patients and staff went beyond the call of duty, as she met everyone with compassion and a smile. As a spectator, she loved all sports, but Major League Soccer, Loyola Marymount Soccer, and Duke University Athletics were at the top of her list.

Micci and Jim were married in Albia, IA, on June 23, 1979. They celebrated 44 great years of marriage. Blessed with three children and six grandchildren, they travelled around the world as a military family, creating homes in six states and in England.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; her mother, Mary Woodcock, of Albia, IA; sister Becci (Fred) Hampe of Monument; son Jimmy Burling of Centennial, son Bobby (Laura) Burling of Centennial, and daughter Becci (Tim) Kelsch of Highlands Ranch; grandchildren Jack, Blake, Henry, and Walker Burling of Centennial; Cori and Cody Kelsch of Highlands Ranch; sister-in-law Becky (John) Gaughan of Colorado Springs, sister-in-law Julie Kirk of Monument, brother-in-law John Burling (Anne) of Arlington, VA; and brother-in-law Steve Burling (Bridgett) of Rapid City, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
