Obituary for Odette Nathalie Gougnart
Odette Nathalie Louise Gougnart, 87, passed away in the presence of her daughter, son-in- law on March 5, 2018.

Odette was born in Tervuren, Belgium, on December 17, 1930 to Théophile Gougnart and Marie-Jeanne Hereng.

She spent her childhood in Tervuren and Brussels. She attended the Université Libre de Bruxelles, where she got her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Germanic Languages and met her first husband, Michel Vanhelleputte. She spent her career teaching German and Dutch, first in high school, and later at the community college level. After her divorce, she married Antonio Novati and retired with him in Porto Recanati, Italy. When Antonio passed away, she moved to Littleton, in 2001, to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.

Odette loved traveling and foreign cultures and traveled all over the world with her husband Antonio, all over Europe and from India to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to China, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. After moving to the United States, she enjoyed a number of cruises, often with her daughter, to the Caribbean, Central America, Panama Canal and South America.

She had a keen interest in all cultures and art and was a very avid learner. She also had a real knack for artwork and decorating.

She had a great love of animals, pets and wildlife alike. She was most generous and never hesitated to give to others.

Odette is survived by her sons and daughter, Frédéric and Stefan Vanhelleputte, and Isabelle Al-Jassim, and by her seven grandsons, Nicolas, David, Kevin and Nathan Vanhelleputte, and Faris, Sami and Hadi Al-Jassim.

We will miss her greatly, and a Celebration of Life will be held for her at Mowafak and Isabelle Al-Jassim’s home on March 31, 2018 at 2 pm.

In remembrance of her great love of animals and nature, donations may be made to the Colorado Humane Society and SPCA, the Sierra Club, or the Defenders of Wildlife.
