Obituary for Pastor Gordon Loyd McRostie
Gordon of Aurora, Colorado was born in Kansas City, KS almost 82 years ago to missionary parents, Loyd and Marjorie McRostie. At the age of 6 months, he moved with his family to Mali, West Africa. He spent much of his school years away from home, first in Mamou, French Guinea, then in Elbing, KS for secondary school at Berean Academy, where he graduated HS in 1954. Post secondary education took him to Bethel College, St. Paul, MN (class of 1958) and Conservative Baptist Seminary (now Denver Seminary), Denver, CO (class of 1962). While at seminary, God put on Gordon’s heart to take the Gospel of Christ to Muslim people overseas. While in training with the Gospel Missionary Union (now Avant Ministries), mutual friends set him up with his future wife, Daphne Downing.
Daphne also had a heart for missions having grown up on the mission field herself. She was accepted by GMU and together they set off for French language school in Switzerland. While there, they got married in July 1965 and moved soon after to the Muslim country of Morocco, in North Africa. They were missionaries in Morocco from 1965-1986, mostly in the capital city of Rabat. During that time, Gordon also pastored the English speaking Protestant Church (1971-1976), and taught English part time at the School of Mines.
In 1986, Gordon and Daphne continued their work with Muslims in Brussels, Belgium, staying until 1998. For much of that time, Gordon was the Regional Director of Muslim Ministries for Belgium, Spain, West Yorkshire, GB, and Morocco. Their last full time assignment took them to the south of Spain, to the city of Malaga. From 1998-2002, Gordon served as the Interim Director of the Malaga Media Center.
In 2002, they moved to Aurora, CO to enjoy retirement and their growing brood of grandchildren. They were still involved with the Mission on a part time basis, speaking at conferences and sharing their knowledge of the Muslim people. Gordon began his long journey with Dementia/Alzheimer’s around 2008, though was able to live at home under the loving care of his wife, Daphne. The disease and complications with pneumonia finally took him away to his Heavenly Father on May 30, 2017.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Daphne (nee Downing), daughter Cyndi Stahl (married to Trent Stahl) of Englewood, CO; son Kenny (married to Kate (nee Miller) of Wilmington, NC, and son Stephen (married to Angie (nee Gustafson) of Commerce City, CO. Another daughter, Marcia, preceded him in death in 1978, at the age of 6. Gordon is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Kassie, Kenzie, and Kaylie McRostie of Wilmington, NC; Dylan, Allie, and Carson Stahl of Englewood, CO, and Malorie, Connor, and Megan McRostie of Commerce City, CO. He is preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Marjorie (Steele) McRostie and by his sister Jean Redin, and brother Jonathan.
