Richard Hogue Coan 88 of Highlands Ranch Colorado passed away October 17th, 2021. Richard was born to Norman and Darlene Coan on March 17, 1933 in Wyandotte, Michigan.
As a boy Richard and his family moved from Michigan to Van Wert Ohio, then Oak Park Illinois (just outside Chicago), and finally to Menasha Wisconsin where he attended high school. It was in Oak Park that he became acquainted with the Boy Scout Program. His favorite hobby was working on bicycles. He was the president of his junior class in Mehasha and worked as a clerk in the local drug store and played on the football team. It was in Menasha that Richard met the woman who would become his wife (Sept 10, 1955), Marylin Ruth Werschem.
Richard served in the Air Force from March 1956 to September 1979. He served his time as a B-47 pilot, and an HH-43B helicopter pilot, serving in Vietnam, and as a Maintenance Squadron Officer in Europe and the United States. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt Colonel with two Air medals, a Distinguished Flying Cross, a Meritorious Service medal, an Air Force Commendation medal and a Gallantry Cross from the Republic of Vietnam.
Richard volunteered his free time with the Boy Scouts of America. He was an avid scout leader, attaining the high honor of Silver Beaver and was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow.
After serving 25 years in the Air Force, Richard moved his family to Littleton Colorado and began working as an engineer for Martin Marietta. He stayed with Martin 13 years, retiring in 1995. He moved to Windcrest Retirement Community in 2007.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years Marylin, and his brothers Marlin (Don) and Norman (Ken) Coan.
Richard is survived by his four children, sons Jeffrey S. Coan of Colorado Springs, Kevin P. Coan of Colorado Springs, and John M. Coan of Greeley Colorado; and his daughter Cheryl Bauer of Dover Pennsylvania. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Terri) and their two daughters Alyssa and Jennifer, Kevin and his daughter Kyla, John (Erika) and their son Edain, and Cheryl and her daughter Caitlin.
