Obituary for Richard Michael Hurley
Mickey, age 86 of Monument, Colorado.
Richard “Mickey” Hurley was the youngest of 5 children born in Chicago, Illinois.. His parents were George Michael Hurley and Jesse Gordon Hurley. His oldest brother Buddy was deceased before my Dad's birth. He is preceded in death by his Brother Bill and Sister Jean. He is survived by his sister Chari Hurley and his wife of 57 years Karen Warren Hurley.
He was born and raised in Chicago. He graduated from Loyola Academy in 1954 and the University of Notre Dame class of 58’. He attended officers candidate school and entered the United States Navy. He completed 6 years of active duty service and 6 years in the reserves. He was honorably discharged with rank of Lt Commander having served on the destroyers Bradford, Osborne and Towers.
He used his charm, wit, and good looks to fool his wife Karen Warren some 57 years ago. She was only 20 years old and naïve to wiles of a traveled Naval officer. Fortunately for us children she hung around and stayed with this character even though she realized she had been fooled. They raised five children in a very loud, highly dysfunctional, and mostly loving environment. The family moved several times over the years. Richard followed in his father’s footsteps by pursuing a sales career with National Cash Register. He started in Los Angeles before being relocated to Hawaii for five years. He was transferred back to California where the family remained for 15 years. After a few stints with some different computer start- ups our father ventured into business on his own. There may be some debate about the success achieved in business, but there is no doubt that he succeeded in life. He was present and available for his children as a Dad and as a coach.
Richard, Karen and the youngest daughter Colleen moved to Monument, Colorado 26 years ago. They fell in love with this state and the community they live in. Richard and Karen have been active members of St Peter’s since their arrival. This church provided a place for him to celebrate his faith. Out Father was a true believer and this Church and the congregation were very important to him.
Their oldest son John was born prematurely with severe mental and physical disabilities. Fortunately for him after leaving home at the age of 16 he has been blessed to be living with the most compassionate and caring people of Chatsworth house in Sylmar, CA
Their oldest daughter Kathleen has six children with her husband Mark who is from England, but we tell their kids they are really Irish. Connor who recently married Monica and is under pressure to deliver a grandchild. Micaela is the oldest daughter, recent law school graduate from Notre Dame and future rainmaker. Liam who has recently graduated from University of Portland and pursuing a career in emergency medicine. Aidan is attending Catholic University in D.C – Fiona is wrapping up her junior year of high school and looking at opportunities to play basketball and attend college and the youngest Camile will be entering her final year of grade school and taking on the world.
George Hurley has four children with his wife Kristi of 22 years. Kiera who is going to be a senior at University of Colorado at Boulder and currently out of the country in Croatia for her summer program. Shea is attending San Francisco State and working on being a fashionista. Tessa will be a junior at Mater Dei High School and the youngest Ryan will graduate 8th grade and be a freshman next year.
Kevin the youngest son and his beautiful wife Sara have three children Emmet, Ashlynn, and Taylor. Emmet is attending the University of Indiana and is learning the harsh reality of being a pledge to his fraternity. Ashlynn is about to graduate high school and will be attending Texas Christian University unless she changes her mind. Taylor their oldest son, a very talented and loving soul passed away last year.
Colleen is the youngest and probably most likeable member of the family. She is married to Rob Dodge. Together they have 5 children all of whom my Dad considered his own grandchildren. Jane Dodge is living in Ft Collins and working with young children. Tatum Hurley is attending Northern Arizona University and is pursuing a degree in construction management and currently working as a mall cop. Hazel Dodge is at the University of Montana and loving it! Kaelan is graduating high school and looking forward to being done. Mia Hurley will be a junior in high school and is currently conspiring with her cousin to go to school at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Our Father was an honest, hard working man with strong principles and faith. He was loud, colorful, and entertaining. If you knew Richard Hurley, you should have a smile on your face. If nothing else he made you laugh!
