Obituary for Rose C. McCallin, Ph.D
Rose Celine McCallin, Ph.D
Rose Celine McCallin passed away unexpectedly on November 12, 2020. We have lost a companion, friend, sister, aunt and colleague. Rose will be remembered for her infectious laugh, quirky sense of humor and keen intellect. Rose loved both her long-term partner Sandy and her furry companion Mittens Kittens. Rose’s family was a priority to her and she would do anything for her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. We affectionately called her “Roo” and will miss her dearly. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion and always made sure a card was signed by Aunt Roo and Mittens Kittens🐱.
Rose discovered her spirit in Greeley, Colorado, earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Ph.D. at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). She earned her Ph.D. in Statistics and Psychometrics in 1988; and her Master of Arts Degree at the University of Denver in 1984. Rose loved numbers and the stories they told. When her nieces asked her for tips on taking the SAT and ACT she would always advise, “Always stick with your first answer…do not doubt yourself.” Rose never doubted herself or those whom she loved. Her spirit will stay with us and be missed daily.
Rose worked at the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (fondly known as DORA) as the Director of Examination and Statistics. She thrived at DORA for almost two decades and always spoke highly of her friends and colleagues, smiling while telling her family how much she loved her job. She was recognized for her professional achievements through multiple awards and was recognized by numerous professional associations for her outstanding service. She served on the Board of the National Council on Measurement in Education. Rose was the author of many books and a contributor to numerous academic and professional publications.
Prior to joining DORA, Rose worked as the Sr. Director of Measurement and Research at The College for Financial Planning and prior to that had a career in journalism and public television.
Rose is survived by her long-time partner Sandy King, her sisters Anne Ayers (Jim), Nancy McCallin (Clark Hine), Julia (aka Goo) McCallin (Kevin Strotz), and Andy and Tommy McCallin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, Katy Ayers (Curtis Arbuckle), Chris Ayers (Michelle Gebhart), Caroline Hine Pardoe (Bryce), Katarina Hine, Eleanor and Claire Strotz, and great nephew James Arbuckle. Her parents, Tom and Jean McCallin, predeceased her in 2012 and 2016, respectively.
Rose requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Denver Dumb Friends League.
