Obituary for Sharon Marie Smith
Smith, Sharon M., of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Brighton, Michigan.
Sharon passed away Monday, December 28, 2015 at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado at age 78, following complications of a recent illness. She was born November 13, 1937 in Highland Park, Michigan, the first child of Clifford P. and Bertha A. Foulks, both deceased. Her brother Richard C. Foulks of Merrimack, NH and sister Pamela L. Wilcox of Spring, TX both preceded her in death.
She is survived by her siblings Ronald H. Foulks of Vero Beach, FL, Sandra A. Wilcox of Spring, TX, Robert V. Foulks of Louisville, KY, Deborah S. Splatt of Lansing, MI and Mark R. Foulks of Memphis, TN along with her siblings in-law. Also survived by her children, Katherine T. Moeller of Littleton, CO, Robert A. Roman, Jr. of Oak Park, MI, Michael T. Roman of Oak Park, MI, Cynthia A. Johnson of Wheat Ridge, CO and son-in-law Richard A. Moeller of Littleton, CO, along with 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Sharon was the oldest of 8 children and grew up in Brighton, MI with her family who were all members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish. She attended the parish grade school and then graduated from Brighton High School in 1955. Her responsibilities as the oldest child meant she helped her parents with her younger siblings, who saw her as a wonderful, caring sister throughout their young lives. In those years, the family spent every holiday, birthday and special occasion at the family’s home on Fieldcrest Dr. It became the central gathering place of all the children and grandchildren as the family grew.
After high school in late 1955, she was married to Robert A Roman of Brighton, MI and started a family of her own. Up until the 1990’s, she was with her sons and daughters and helped to raise her grandchildren in Michigan. She spent some time in Florida with a brother and sister, and then she eventually moved to Colorado to live near her daughters and other grandchildren until her passing.
Throughout her life she enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, cooking, bowling and bingo. She was employed throughout the years in the restaurant and bar industry as a waitress, bartender, cook and manager. She loved to cook for the family gatherings and in her later years, became the lunch greeter and cake baker at her senior apartment building in Denver that she lovingly called the “Hotel”.
Her children will remember her most for her devotion to them. She never hesitated to be there for them as they grew up and then started families of their own. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy as she kept counting her many blessings. She was most known for her fiery red hair and her humorous wit and positive attitude towards life. She never gave up on anyone and fought her recent illness valiantly. Her presence will be missed and longed for, but we know she will always be with us sending her love and strength.
Burial will follow services in the Spring of 2016 at St. Patrick’s Calvary Cemetery in Brighton, Michigan.
