Obituary for Sidney Carr Walker, M.D.
Dr. Sidney Walker, lovingly known as Sid the Kid, age 96 of Erie, CO, longtime practicing physician in Port Huron, MI, and Glenwood Springs, CO, passed away May 19 in Broomfield County, CO, after a one-week end-of-life transition. He was born October 10, 1924 in Kansas City, MO.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Kansas in 1947 followed by an internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. On July 23, 1949, he married Elizabeth (Lee) Shea in Kansas City, MO. He then served in the US Army from 1950-1952 as an Orthopedic Surgeon in Japan and Korea. Following his discharge from the service and finishing his residency, he began his Orthopedic practice in Port Huron, Michigan in 1954. He closed the office doors in 1988. Sid and Lee moved to Colorado where he continued to practice for many years. He retired in 1995.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lee Walker, on January 1, 1999.
In 2001, Sid married Patricia Ribich. For 16 years they traveled the world together and made many loving memories with her 5 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Patricia passed away in 2017.
He will be remembered by his family and friends for seeing patients in his white coat, riding horses in the Rocky Mountains, skiing gracefully down snowy slopes, boating in Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, telling jokes, singing songs, reading the poems he wrote, gathering votes for his Republican party, giving free medical advice, looking for another bird to add to his list, listening intently to your problems or stories, and for being a kind, loving, optimistic character.
He is survived by his daughters Lucinda Walker and Robin Walker (Mikhail Charnotski) and son Sidney C. Walker III and granddaughter Tian Walker.
A tribute to Sid from a long-time friend: "I believe that God gives special gifts to all souls before they are born. They are meant not to keep for themselves but to share with and serve as examples to others to help them along the path of a life full of trials and problems. Physicians play a very special role in this regard as they guide their patients through the uncertainty of often serious health problems. It takes a very special Physician with compassion to guide patients through these times. Sid was one of those special Physicians because of his overall belief that we are on this earth to help others. Sid was a great friend who taught me this powerful message: 'What we do on earth for ourselves dies with us, What we do for others lives forever and becomes immortal.' Ski safe, Sid, until we someday ski together forever in that 'Big Burn' in the sky. Peace my friend, Jim McTevia"
Sid's Memberships he was proud of: American Medical Association Michigan State Medical Society St. Clair County Medical Society International College of Surgeons Michigan State Orthopedic Society American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Detroit Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Irish American Orthopedic Society Western Orthopedic Association
Sid wrote many medical papers. In his notes about his life, I found the following paragraph: “One of my two best papers was on Complete Deltoidectomy for Malignant Tumor (a five-year-old girl with follow up at age 18). This paper had international recognition. The second paper was Bilateral Shoulder Fusion for Habitual Disclosure.”
Additional details on his medical military service: Sid was stationed in Osaka Japan at a Red Cross hospital for six months, and then was sent to Pusan, Korea where he took care of 500 POWs for 6 months. He saw patients once a week with translator and preformed surgeries as needed.
With love and pride, Robin, Cindy, and Sid III
