Obituary for Theresa "Teri" Marie Lauwers

A bright radiating light in our world has gone out. It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce Theresa “Teri” Marie Bernadette (Ferus) Lauwers’ passing on Monday November 14, 2022, at her vivacious age of 70.

Teri will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Carissa & husband Brian Thompson, her son Mark & wife Desi Lauwers, her best friend / grandson Brodie Lauwers, who already misses their Friday night date nights. Her eight brothers and sisters, Rudy Ferus, Mary Sites, Mike Ferus, Ann Sullivan, Patty Krali, Francis Ferus, Kay Daniels, and Joe Ferus; as well as many other relatives, her many friends and the close community at St Joseph Catholic Parish in Golden will greatly mourn her absence.

Born and raised in Michigan where she received a BS in Nursing, Teri later would argue that after over 40 years she should be considered a Colorado Native. If not that she was born in CO, but that she lived the true Colorado lifestyle. Over the years camping, hiking, skiing, attending concerts at Red Rocks, and experiencing an avid outdoor lifestyle, she amplified Coloradan.

Teri was committed to her children’s hobbies, at times, more than they; education, sports, and other interests, immersing herself right in. She Managed the Golden Marlins Swim Team, was Den Leader for Cub Scouts, and danced with Carissa’s dance studio. She was their greatest supporter for playing instruments, vigorously cheering them on at sporting events, & concerts.

She adored many other pastimes, such as watching musical movies like Fiddler on the Roof and The Sound of Music. She was crafty and had been looking forward to “retirement” to pick up some of those hobbies again. Her most famous, brewing her own Kahlúa - “Nana T’s Kahlua”.

Always strong in her faith, her calling came over two decades ago and she began to work for the St. Joseph Catholic Parish, when she completed a graduate degree of Catholic Biblical studies in 1999. Her love for God and those in the community was fierce and never wavering. She touched many lives as Director of Religious Education and the Liturgical Coordinator. Though, title would not begin to describe all her accomplished at the parish. She expanded the Youth Ministry, Adult Ed and RCIA programs, Liturgical and Parish Ministries. She directed the Religious Ed program, Vacation Bible School, and trained liturgical ministers, all while overseeing fundraisers such as the Parish Dinner, Lenten Fish Fries, personally cooking bulks of food for those food-related events.

Her birthday shared the same date as the Feast Day of St. Martha, a symbol for strength, maturity, common sense, and concern and care for others. Teri was absolutely a servant of God and those around her. Everyone at St. Joseph referred to her as “Martha”.

Teri always loved sharing her faith with others and spreading the word of Christ. Her children all agree that the closest they ever felt to God was in her presence. She loved God and all God’s children more than anything… almost anything…

Her greatest love was for her Grandson, Brodie. He was in love with her just as much. They had date nights when they shared Freddy’s, Ice Cream, Gaming, and Books most every Friday. If you know Teri, you know her grandboy.

Theresa, Teri, Nana T, “Martha”, Mom… you will be profoundly missed.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Parish. St. Joseph’s is planning to purchase a statue of Mother Teresa and the children, dedicated to Teri, to be prominently displayed in the Education Center. If excess funds are available a scholarship in her name will be established for the Religious Education Program. Please write Teri Lauwers Memorial in the memo line of your check.
