Obituary for Winifred Zoe Pool
Pool, Winifred Zoe, 92, of Highlands Ranch, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 12 after a short illness. While under the care of the supportive staff of Porter Hospice for the past two weeks before her death, Winifred was continually surrounded by family and friends who loved her. She was born on February 23, 1921 in New York to Howard and Winifred Goodman and grew up in the Queens area of NYC where she was very active with her youth group at Christ Congregational Church. She met “her Bill” at the youth group when both were 14, he joined the Navy during WWII, and they married in 1944. Both came from very humble beginnings and where faith and family were the cornerstones of life. Winifred and Bill were an ‘Exxon’ family and moved to many places during their 54 years of married life. They built their first home themselves in New Jersey where their daughter, Beverly, was born in 1950. Work assignments took them to many places including Tulsa, OK, Houston and Midland, TX, Tripoli, Libya, and Darien, CT. Their retirement years were spent near Winston-Salem, NC. Bill preceded her in death in 1999. Faith was the cornerstone of Winifred’s life, and in each new city she called home, finding a church was always the most important matter. It was there that she would make lasting friendships, join the couples groups, champion the craft guilds, the building committee, or work as the church treasurer. Despite the many moves, the friendships that were her ‘extended family’ endured throughout her life. As a career homemaker, Winifred was an incredible wife, mother, Girl Scout leader, and friend, and still found time in her later years to return to college at University of Tulsa and University of Houston, while also taking care of her own parents who lived with them. At the tender age of 88, Winifred moved from North Carolina to the Vi Retirement Community at Highlands Ranch to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She began once again to make new friends and found a new church home at St. Andrew United Methodist Church where she attended Disciple Classes and senior lunches to continue her spiritual growth. With assistance from dear friends, she continued to board the shuttle bus to church every Sunday. Winifred is loved by her daughter, Beverly Young of Castle Rock, her ‘favorite’ son-in-law Jim, her granddog, Sadie, and a host of friends the world over! She is an inspiration to all who crossed her path by her faith, courage, love, and of course her great sense of humor, her positive spirit, and quiet determination. “Love Lasts Longer Than Life”
