Obituary for H.W. "Bill" Nelson
H.W. “Bill” Nelson, born May 1, 1930 in Denver, CO, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 18, 2017. He grew up in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood, graduated from East High School and the University of Denver. He chose a profession in accounting working as a Certified Public Accountant with Hamma & Nelson CPA, PC, a firm founded by his father, where he served as President for more than 30 years. During those years he was active in his profession serving numerous ways in local, national, and international projects and committees to sustain and promote the profession. Never slowing, “retirement” not in his vocabulary, he moved on to specializing in ownership and management of various types of real estate. He continued to work, actually at work the day of his passing.

He also served in numerous capacities throughout the community, serving as Chairman, Officer or board member of the Denver Chamber of Commerce. He was elected to be one of ten National Vice Presidents for the Junior Chamber of Commerce, was both state and local president, being elected as the out-standing young businessman of the year. Bill helped organize and started a group called “Interscape 25.” A public private project to clean up “I-25;” collecting enough trash along I-25 to fill the Old Mile High Stadium six times. Bill has been affiliated with Porter and Littleton Hospitals and their foundations, the Rotary Club of Denver, the Boy Scouts of America and the Eagle Scout Program. He has pioneered and participated in many civic programs and developments in the Denver area throughout the years.

Bill was extremely active with his church home, Cherry Hills Community Church. Through the Lord’s direction he has been blessed to assist with the church’s growth for over 35 years. He was elected a ruling elder and served as chairman of the finance committee. He continued to serve as an Elder-emeritus. He started and continued to lead a Bible study for men 70 and older.

He was an avid golfer. He and Hank have traveled abroad with the International Golf Team as ambassadors to the United States, playing golf with businessmen and their wives in six different countries. This was a group started by President Eisenhower to promote peace and goodwill for the U.S.A. The Nelson’s were honored to have been asked to be part of such a nice event.
Bill loved to work in the yard. He took great pride in his yard and the surrounding property and until recent years did most of the work himself. As a true weekend warrior, if he was home – he was working outside 90% of the daylight time.

Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Henri Ann “Hank.” Between them they have 7 children, Todd, deceased (Kimberly) Nelson, Brickey (Larry) Spear, Deborah (Jerry) Kolassa, Cayla (Lynn) Spear, David (Michelle) Platzer, Leanna Cox, Julie (Creighton) Bildstein. Ten grandchildren, Bailey and Reed Nelson, Tyson and Todd Spear , both deceased, Caylyn (Tim) Hood, Noah and Lily Platzer, Blake Carette, Cole and Alec Bildstein. And two great grandbabies, Adley and Coleston Hood.

He loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and so desired his family and friends to know Him and have a personal relationship. He was a wonderful, loving husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and friend. Always generous with his time, talents and finances; constant encourager and mentor.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Chapel at Cherry Hills Community Church, 3900 Grace Blvd, Highlands Ranch, CO at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 27th, 2017.
