Obituary for Miles Eugene Speck
Miles Eugene Speck was born July 16, 1939 at Farnam, NE to Eugene P. Speck and Elizabeth B. (Eddingfield) Speck of Ingham, NE. Miles passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. In 1942 at the age of three years, the family moved to Holdrege, NE where his Dad became employed by the Nebraska State Highway Department. In December, 1949, when Miles was in the 5th grade, the family moved to Benkelman, NE where his Dad took on a new position with the Nebraska State Highway Department as Maintenance Foreman in charge of the maintenance of the state highways in Dundy County.

Miles enjoyed the small town environment and enjoyed doing things with the many friends he made. Miles graduated from Benkelman High School with the Class of 1957. He worked for McDonald’s IGA all through high school and until 1958. He moved to Denver, CO in September, 1958 and attended Barnes Business School from September, 1958 to February 1959. He worked at Safeway Stores from 1959 until February 1960.

Miles enlisted in the U.S. Navy February 25, 1960 and was sent to the U.S. Naval Training Station in San Diego, CA. He served on the USS Bryce Canyon which was based out of Long Beach, CA. He next served on the USS Gridley (DLG 21) which was based out of Seattle, WA from 1962 to 1964. He served as a 2nd Class Interior Communication Electrician. He was honorably discharged on February 23, 1964.

He then worked for convenience stores in the Denver area until 1968. He became a U.S. Postal Service Carrier on August 1, 1968 and retired from the Postal Service December 31, 1999. He enjoyed working with all the letter carriers and employees at the Pecos Station at 1411 Cortez, Denver, CO.

After retiring from the Postal Service he became active in the Volkswagen Enthusiasts of Colorado in the Denver area, and enjoyed it so much and met many new friends in this club. They took many VW cruises around the areas of the local mountains and rural areas outside of metro Denver. They always stopped along the way for breakfast or lunch and good fellowship. The club had many car club shows at different locations in the Denver area where they showed their old vintage Volkswagens drawing many car buffs to see the cars on display. The Volkswagen Enthusiasts club will dedicate their May meeting in Miles memory. He also enjoyed going on the annual Treffen Air-Cooled VW Cruise which all the VW car buffs came in their VW’s from different states to cruise the Oregon and California coast ending up in Ventura, CA. His pride and joy was his 1973 Karman Ghia which he purchased new and kept in tip top condition. He loved working on his car and helping others work on their cars. His Karman Ghia was featured on the front cover of the 2008 issue of the Karman Ghia Parts & Restoration catalog.

Miles and his sisters were taught to dance by their parents and friends as teenagers and went to many dances and he loved to jitterbug and swing the ladies around the dance floor. He was such a good dancer. Miles will be truly missed by all his family and all the many friends he met and enjoyed throughout his life.

Miles was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Elizabeth Speck. Miles is survived by his two sisters, Glenda Haack of Mead, WA and her son, Randall Yost and wife Jackie of Spokane, WA and their daughters, Jessica and Miranda Yost; and sister, Marilyn Dobrowski and husband Ray of Littleton, CO and their children, Michael Dobrowski and wife, Kristy and their children, Jordan, Jacob and Logan of Littleton, CO; and Connie Aper and her children Bryce and Shay of Longmont, CO; plus two great-great nieces and two great-great nephews.
