Charles Marion Cockerham, age 93, of Bucksport, Maine, formerly of Littleton, Colorado, husband of the late Lila Maxine Newbill Cockerham, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022 in Bucksport, Maine. He was born on April 30, 1929 near Hammond, Louisiana to Alonzo Thomas Cockerham and Ethel Amanda Joiner. He attended school and worked on the family farm in Hammond, Tickfaw, and Loranger, Louisiana until he was 17 years old.
He served in the US Army from 1947 to 1948. He went to boot camp at Fort Jackson, North Carolina, then trained as a Medical Aidman at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He then served at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
In September 1950 Chuck was one of the first missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to leave from the Albany, Louisiana branch to serve a two-year mission. He was a traveling missionary in the Central States Mission for most of those two years, and then finished his service in Lincoln, Nebraska. Shortly after returning home in September 1952 he moved to Provo, Utah and attended Brigham Young University.
He married Lila Maxine Newbill on August 29, 1955 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple.
His children are Patrice Cockerham (David Dunn,) Charise Cockerham, Denise Hall, Allan Cockerham - deceased (Leeta Cockerham,) Kathleen Treu (Denny Treu,) Aileen Birch (Mike Birch,) and David Cockerham (Lisa Cockerham.) Chuck’s grandchildren and great grandchildren are Nichele Dunn, Kyle Dunn - David and Lewis Dunn, Dillon Cohen - Calvin and Camille Cohen, BreeAnna Cocas - Carter Eagan, Carrissa Goodyear, Shawnteen Hall - Noah Loepp-Hall, Seth Hall, Conner Loepp-Hall, Alissia Velarde and Saibyn Wares; Justin Hall - Theodore Hall, Ashley Cockerham, Shelby Cockerham - Ellis Dill, Taylor Cockerham, Hanna Christensen - Hudson and Haven Christensen, Cody Treu, Brittany Smith - Evalyn and Brielle Smith, Sydney Cockerham - Finnic Isaacs, Reagan Cockerham, Addison Cockerham, and McKay Cockerham. Chuck’s siblings, all deceased, are Louis Julius Cockerham, Leslie Thomas Cockerham, Alvin Cockerham, and Lawrence Alton Cockerham.
Chuck owned Santa Fe Motors and West Union Industrial Center in Englewood, Colorado and was an automobile wholesaler. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a gardener and landscaper, an oil painter, a scriptorian, and enjoyed reading about the Civil War and other histories. He loved books. He especially loved Lila, and missed her every day after she died. He loved horses, being with his Dad, taking trips to Louisiana and drives in the Colorado mountains, his Lincoln Town car and his 1949 Cadillac Sedanette.
