Obituary for Barbara Ann Colchin
Today we celebrate and honor the life of Barbara Ann Colchin, born October 28, 1937.
She responded to Jesus' calling, November 30, 2017.

Barbara was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Floyd and Magdelene White and was the oldest of 6 children. She had many responsibilities helping her mother care for her younger siblings. They had a happy life, playing with their many cousins, singing and playing the piano, hosting backyard parties and weddings, and swimming and barbecuing in Peony Park. Growing up across the street from Holy Name Catholic church, convent, and school, she lead a spiritual life, attending daily Mass, and going to school. Her love for the Catholic faith was exemplified in everything she did throughout her life.

Once out of school, she went to work caring for newborns, taught second grade in Omaha public schools and Holy Name grade school. Her siblings all confirmed she was the one in charge, dare we say ‘bossy’. In later years she also loved gardening and feeding the birds and squirrels.

Barbara met Tom, her one true love in January 1957 at a high school party he was hosting at his parents home (while they were on vacation!). They married in August 1959. Ten months later identical twin girls were born, and within 4 years, they had 4 children under the age of 4! In 1969, they were blessed with Amy, the fifth child of the Colchin Clan.

In 1974, Tom took a promotion, moving the family to Denver. Barbara spent her days caring for children, volunteering at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and managing a household which included dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, and the occasional snake. No matter how busy life was, she never said no to a person in need or a church committee that needed her direction. At last count, Barb was involved in more than 9 church committees over the years including Coordinator for the Art and Environment Department; Altar linens care; Funeral Luncheons coordinator; Taught Religious Education; Volunteer for cleaning days; Participated in set-up for social events; Lector
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Eucharist; Altar and Rosary Society and helped with their Bake Sales.

When life became a bit overwhelming, she would jump up and down in the kitchen, screeching. We all cleared out quickly, including the dog, running for the trails in the foothills behind our home. She adored her 11 grandchildren spoiling them any chance she got, feeding them grilled cheese sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies.

Honoring God and family were the focus of every moment of her life. The Amazing grace, bravery, and positive attitude with which Tom and Barbara managed cancer are something we should all strive to emulate in our lives. Her smile and beautiful face are forever etched in our memory and we will miss and honor her always

Please check back for the families thoughts in making a memorial contribution in Barbara's memory in lieu of flowers.
