Obituary for Florence Mae Boyte - Lloyd
Florence was born on February 19, 1923 to Ross and Agnes Rita Shelden at St. Joseph’s Hospital Denver, Colorado, joining her 18 month old brother, James. Twenty-two months later, her sister, Edith, was born, and the youngest, Robert, in November of 1927. All three siblings predeceased her.
The family lived near City Park and attended Loyola Catholic Church. Florence graduated from East High in 1941. She and Edith worked serving at banquets at the Oxford Hotel as teenagers. One evening, Florence accidentally dumped a tray of shrimp cocktails on an important, well dressed lady. That job ended that night! The two girls went on to work at the phone company for several years.
On February 5, 1947 Florence married the love of her life, Ralph Harlan Boyte. They settled in Englewood. Their first child, Janice Marie Boyte, was born on December 27, 1949 at Ft. Washakie Memorial Hospital in Worland, Wyoming. Ralph’s business would keep them in Worland for a total of about three years before moving back to Denver.
On December 31, 1955 James Michael Boyte was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver. After moving to Aurora Florence worked for Dept. of Defense at Lowry AFB and Fitzsimons for over 30 years in finance and supply acquisition, receiving many awards and letters of commendation, before retiring in 1985.
Her retirement years were busy and fulfilling. She served in many ministries at Queen of Peace Parish in Aurora. She learned arts and crafts, being especially good at Southwestern ceramics, Bunka (Japanese needle work) and stained glass artwork. She studied Spanish. She joined a travel club and enjoyed many trips. She even took golf lessons!
When she visited Mike and Louisa on the east coast, they explored Boston, New York City, New Jersey (Atlantic City), Connecticut and Washington, D.C.
Her world travels (mostly with Janice) included Australia (where she slept in an underground motel in “the Bush”), New Zealand, continental Europe, (including The Vatican twice), Portugal with a visit to Fatima, Ireland (which she dearly loved), Hawaii many times, Mexico several times, Alaska, Costa Rica, Panama, all of the Caribbean, Vancouver, BC, Canada (where she and her daughter were blessed to be within 10 feet of Pope John Paul II in his Pope Mobile at an open air Mass in 1985).
She was in Florida to see the space shuttle launch with John Glenn aboard. Florence and Janice went to Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego when John Elway and her beloved Broncos won their first Super Bowl beating the favored Packers. She visited many of the lower 48 states.
She saw many famous acts in Las Vegas including Elvis, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin………and even had a conversation with Omar Sharif in the casino at Caesar’s Palace!
Florence loved the Broncos…..she finally got season tickets in the south stands in 1984 after being on the waiting list for 10 years, and attended games until 2014 always decked out in her orange and blue.
She moved to Littleton in 2011 to be closer to her children and became a parishioner at Light of the World. She had many friends at Church and especially in the senior’s Club, partaking in many of the “field trips”.
Florence had a wonderful, fulfilling life, especially the 33 years of adventures and “WOW” moments in retirement.
She spent the last 26 months in assisted living where she continued to enjoy arts and crafts, Sunday Mass, musical entertainment, weekly visits to the on-site beauty salon and outings with her children, especially “girl’s day out” lunch, manicure and pedicures with Janice.
She is survived by her children Janice and Mike, and Mike’s wife, Louisa, who have been married for 31 years. Florence is also survived by nieces Linda, Leslie, Dodie and Sherri, and nephews Rick, Scott, Dan, Rob and Dave.
Florence was an incredibly awesome, selfless, devoted loving Mom. She was also a great sister, aunt and mother-in-law. And a very good friend to all.
There are no words to describe our broken hearts, how much she will be missed, or the emptiness we feel from our sudden and unexpected loss. But, we are comforted in knowing she is at peace in the loving arms of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is truly The Light of The World.
