Obituary for Mary Jean Snider
Snider, Mary Jean, beloved wife of Charles J. Snider and mother of Diane M. Helmer. Also survived and sorely missed by her sister Miriam E. Blount, and numerous nieces and nephews . Mary was born July 3, 1922, in Keystone, Iowa, and grew up in rural Iowa with parents Victor Holst and Edna Emily Smetzer Holst, brothers Robert and Virl, and sister Miriam. After completing her nurse’s training and earning her bachelor’s degree from The University of Iowa, she eventually settled in Denver. While in Colorado, she worked in private-duty nursing and then at Denver General Hospital for eighteen years. Upon her retirement from Denver General, she worked part-but-really-full- time at first Davis Nursing Home in Denver, then Castle Rock Care Center. In Denver, she met and fell in love with Charles J. Snider. They were married March 10, 1954. Daughter Diane followed in 1955. Jay (Chuck) and Mary enjoyed friends, family, dancing, dining out and family vacations. They worked hard throughout their lives, and then decided to work even harder during their retirement years by homesteading 120 acres in rural Douglas County. Jay saw to building the house, barn, garage and greenhouse. Jay and Mary worked together to transform the property with innumerable trees, landscaping features, flowers and vegetable gardens. Although they had not initially planned on it, they always shared their home with every cat (and one dog) that showed up at the door needing help, giving even the more feral ones as much pampering as any animal could want. They attended Central Presbyterian Church while living in Denver, and New Hope Presbyterian Church after their move to the Larkspur area. Mary died March 24, 2012.
