Obituary for Ernest Henry Gutierrez
Gutierrez, Ernest Henry, age 84 of Denver. “Sorrow comes in great waves… but it rolls over us, and though it may almost smother us, it passes and we remain.” Henry James Grandpa wouldn’t want us to focus on the sadness of his death, but instead focus on the happiness in our lives. He would want us to appreciate each other and our future. Although we will miss him, his smile, his love, we take consolation in the good feeling of our memories. Grandpa Ernie was born in Delta, Colorado on May 5, 1929, to Jose Frutoso Gutierrez and Sadie Sadilla (Trujillo). He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Maria, Valentin, and Juanita. Surviving siblings are his younger sisters Nora Garcia and Lena Garrison. Grandpa was enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was in active combat during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in 1947. In 1951, Grandpa met Grandma Rita (Castillo-Montano). Over the next 28 years together they had four sons Ernie Benny (wife Teresita), Victor Lee (wife Mary), Richard (wife Patricia), and Marshall (wife Pauline). From his sons Grandpa had six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren: Victoria (Aurelia, Estrella, and Graciella), Michelle (Jack, Sean, Aryton, and Isaiah), Catherine (Gabriel), Zachary (Isabella, Isaac), Michael, and Simone. For many years he worked as a butcher for Sigmans Processing Warehouse. Great-Grandpa Victor also helped him get a job for the railroads for a period of time. When his boys were growing up, Grandpa would coach their football team. He was a great dancer according to grandma. He enjoyed taking his boys camping and fishing. Grandpa taught his children and grandchildren how to play chess. He felt that it was important to share his knowledge with us. He prided himself knowing that he was self-taught the Spanish language as well as his self-accomplished mechanical skills (he loved cars). He was actively involved with Sacred Heart Church and served as an usher for many years. Grandpa was very proud of his Indian heritage. He also enjoyed playing an acoustic guitar, eating black licorice and the scent of Vicks vapor rub. Although Grandpa had many things to be proud of, I believe he was most proud of his sons. They are living examples of his best attributes. Grandpa, we will always miss you. We love you grandpa, your legacy will live on in all of us for the rest of our lives. We The Family are very appreciative of your thoughts and prayers and especially for your love, we would like you, extended family, and friends to know that we consider you apart of this family and together as one family we will honor Ernest Gutierrez.
