Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army and served 5 years before attending Oklahoma State University, where he majored in horticulture. He furthered his education by attending business school in Omaha, Nebraska. He then took a job licensing large semi trucks and trailers. After relocating several times, he settled in Littleton, Colorado in 1968. He opened a sprinkler system business called The Sprinkler Man. He later opened Gene Teter Trucking Service (GTTS), which was active until 2014.
