Obituary for Jane Lynn Evans
Evans, Jane Lynn, age 67 of Colorado Springs. JANE (SETZER) EVANS July 15, 1947 – January 14, 2015 Jane Evans, 67, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2015 following a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer. Jane was born July 15, 1947 to Richard & Louise Jensen (both deceased) of South St. Paul, MN. During her youth, Jane loved to spend summers at the local pools and became an avid synchronized swimmer. In early adulthood, Jane worked in the securities industry, where she met John Setzer. She and John married in October 1966 and from that union were born daughters Holly and Tracy. In 1981 she was recruited as an executive for a western slope oil company and she, John and their daughters relocated to Denver, CO. After Colorado’s western slope oil industry collapsed in the mid-1980’s, Jane took a management position at Target. In September 1989, Jane was hired as one of the first General Managers in the then new franchise haircare chain, Great Clips. Working for Jim Hemak, one of the early Great Clips franchisees, she helped him grow his business from 6 salons to almost 40 in three markets, earning the respect of Great Clips’ corporate staff, franchisees, salon managers and stylists. In February 1993 Jane’s husband John unexpectedly passed away. The following year Jane received Great Clips’ General Manager of the Year Award. In July 2004, Jane’s boss introduced her to Frank Evans of Colorado Springs, and they married on June 24, 2005 at St. Peter Church in Monument. In June 2006 Jane & Frank become the owners/franchisees of the Great Clips salons in the Colorado Springs/Pueblo market. Jane often teased that that was the “ultimate business exit strategy” … marry off your General Manager and then sell them the business! As a Great Clips franchisee Jane saw continued growth opportunity. Working with her General Manager and team of Salon Managers they set about to grow the business, a successful but never-ending process. With a strong belief that being engaged in the community is important as well as good business, she and her team embraced raising funds each fall for Children’s Hospital Colorado at Memorial Hospital, raising more than $205,000 since 2008. At a Great Clips meeting in June 2010, Jane endorsed the concept of providing free clipper cuts to patients facing hair loss due to cancer treatment, proposed by Great Clips’ CEO, herself a cancer survivor. Three months later Jane was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. A year later, after undergoing chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and a few set-backs along the way, Jane was in remission and took up the mission of system-wide adoption of free clipper cuts for cancer patients facing hair loss. As a result, effective July 1, 2014, all 3,600+ Great Clips salons in the U.S. and Canada are required to participate in “Clips of Kindness.” She believed passionately that no one should have to pay to have their hair clippered off due to cancer treatment … a needed but unwanted service … and that the free service should be provided with a sense of caring, empathy and kindness. On September 22, 2014, Jane & Frank were honored with Great Clips’ 2014 “Franchisee of the Year” award in recognition of their business success and growth and for Jane’s leadership of the Clips of Kindness effort. In addition to leading a successful business organization, Jane loved the ocean, traveling, shopping, doting on her grandchildren, cheering on the Broncos, and gathering her family together for holiday meals. Jane is survived by her husband Frank, daughters Holly (Phil) Gallegos of Littleton, CO and Tracy (Mike) Galloway of Lakewood, CO; step-sons Ryan & Scott Evans of Colorado Springs, grandson Steven Kenney, granddaughters Tiaja Rosado, Nicole Kenney, Katelyn & Haley Gallegos and Kira Alexander, step-granddaughter Leila Evans, great-grandsons O’Rylyn & London, brother Richard of South St. Paul, MN, sister-in-law Judy (Steve) Reithmeier of Danbury, WI and numerous nieces & nephews in Minnesota.
