Obituary for Joseph Allan Strain
Strain, Joseph Allan, age 83 of Denver, passed away October 1, 2014 at Porter Hospice. He was born in Denver, Colorado on November 15, 1930, the third son of Elmer and Tessa Strain. He married Jeanette Scoggin on March 18, 1951. He graduated from South High School in 1948. He attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma and went on to get his masters at the University of Colorado. He was a teacher and coach from 1952 to 1986 at Cole Jr High, Manual High School, South High School and George Washington High School. He coached multiple baseball summer programs including Legion B Baseball, Old Timers Baseball and programs at Red Shield Community Center. His high school basketball teams won state championships four times in 1968, 1970, 1982 and 1986. He was the High School Basketball Coach of the Year in 1970 and 1982. When he retired from the Denver Public Schools he went on to be the assistant basketball coach at Metro State University from 1987 to 1993 and took over the head coaching job in 1994. He finished his career volunteering at Presentation and Annunciation Schools coaching basketball. He was honored by being inducted into the Colorado High School Athletics Association Hall of Fame, Metro State Hall of Fame and Colorado Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a great influence in many lives throughout his years teaching and coaching and he loved every minute of it. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother John Paul. He is survived by his wife Jeanette, brother James, son Joe (Debra), daughter Jeannine (Laird) Walton, daughter Joan (Mike) Lambert, grandchildren Ryan (Kate) Strain, Whitney (Drew) Moser, Sarah (Jack) Conner, Lisa Walton, Grant (Emily) Lambert, Harrison Lambert, Connor Lambert, and 3 great grandchildren.
