Obituary for Joshua Eric Skilling
Josh, age 30 of Morrison, Colorado. Beloved husband of Judy. Loving father of Jayna. Son of Jay and Laura Skilling of San Antonio, Texas
Joshua Eric Skilling, AKA Joshua P. Eric, was born on August 18, 1987 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a precious blue-eyed child who generously loved his brother and sister, often times giggling and joking with them. They would play jokes on each other, rough-house and wrestle, and reminisce about 80's movies. I even heard a story about Wal-mart and getting kicked out but that's for another time.
He was a caring person that treasured his relationships with his friends. Since grade-school, Joshua had the same friends throughout his life. They were his partners-in-crime, online gaming buddies, and wilderness preparation compadres. They would spend hours in Joshua's bedroom playing video games and cracking jokes. They were so close that they all even decided to enlist in the Army together. Bad idea!! But everyone loved being around Josh.
Josh was a fisherman. He loved going fishing, even if he didn't catch anything. He would spend hours at several different lakes, rivers, and ponds in hopes of catching a fish. It was the excitement and joy of being in nature, that he loved the most.
Josh loved the outdoors as well, especially camping. If he had his way, he'd camp in the backyard to "Test his gear" every day. He enjoyed the rustic atmosphere and even commented that the only way to camp is by using a hammock, not a tent. He would collect wilderness survival gear, research the latest wilderness strategies, and start fires in our backyard from waterproof starters all in hopes of backpacking on the Appalachian Trail one day.
Josh was never short on having ambitious dreams. Some he accomplished and some he didn't. There were several things he wanted to check off on his bucket list; such as taking in the awe of the Roman Coliseum, experiencing the beauty of the Northern Lights in Iceland, visiting the mountainous peaks of Alaska, and watching a professional Dallas Cowboys game, in a skybox, of course. (He always had expensive taste!). It was the best of both worlds when we went on an Alaskan cruise during the salmon run. The day we arrived in Juneau for our ziplining excursion, we had to take a small motor boat to the other side of the lake. Salmon were jumping all over each other and Josh was kicking himself about not bringing his fishing gear. "Where are we gonna put the salmon? We don't have a fridge in our room.", I said. "It doesn't matter. They're everywhere!!", he said.
Outside of his favorite activities of fishing and camping, Joshua loved to eat. It's been said that Joshua didn't care if the woman he married was ugly, just as long as she could cook, he would put a bag over her head and marry her. Fortunately, I never had to wear a bag over my head. He had a knack for brownies. His mother knew that Josh enjoyed licking and tasting the remnants of the brownie mix into the designated "brownie bowl". No one was entitled to savor the brownie bowl, except Jayna. She was the exception to the rule.
We cherish the memories we all have of Josh. Although he left us too soon, the positive and joyful memories we have as a family will never leave us. I know he is up there eating a buffet of chicken wings and Chinese food, camping along a beautiful river and fishing to his hearts content.
