Obituary for Millicent Ferree Stewart

Millicent Stewart passed on August 16, 2015. She was born February 2, 1918 in Des Moines, Iowa to Donald and Marguerite (McWilliams) Ferree, great-granddaughter of Ozias Ferree, pioneer and homesteader of Dallas County, Iowa. The family of Ferree arrived in Pennsylvania in 1708, settling on 2200 acres of land in what is now Lancaster County, purchased from William Penn.

Her childhood was in Waukee, Iowa where she graduated from Waukee High School. She attended business college in Des Moines, and was employed by Iowa Mutual Tornado Insurance. She found business too confining however, and in 1937 she picked up and moved to Denver, enrolling at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her RN diploma. In 1941 she applied to United Airlines, then hiring RN’s to staff its stewardess positions. Her first flight on an airplane was her trip from Denver to San Francisco for her job interview. Millie served as a stewardess on B247 and DC-3 aircraft when commercial flying provided glamour and adventure, and she counted Hollywood actors including Clark Gable and Myrna Loy and personalities the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt among her passengers. She flew until November 1943 when she married Ralph O. Stewart, a pilot for United. He predeceased her in 2004.

They raised five children in Greenwood Village where Millie was a resident for nearly 60 years. She served a 26 year career as a volunteer patient representative at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. Millie was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Littleton. She was an active member of Clipped Wings, the organization of former United Airlines stewardesses. In recent years she was the oldest living member of the Denver chapter of Clipped Wings. She is survived by 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grand children. One daughter, Marguerite, predeceased her.
