Obituary for Robert 'Bob' Lee Miller
Miller, Bob, a resident of Wind Crest Retirement Community, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 11, 2012. He was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania to June (Youngson) and A. Logan Miller. Bob attended Lehigh University where he majored in Industrial Engineering. World War II interrupted his education when he was drafted and served in the United States Army Air Corp. He flew on a B-17 as a radio operator for several bombing missions. Bob was stationed in Italy. After completing his military service, he returned to Lehigh in 1946. While there, he met the love of his life, Estelle Green. They were introduced at a YMCA dance and he gave her the nickname, “Essie”. That night, while walking Essie home, he told her someday they would marry. After graduation, Bob and Essie were married on July 30, 1949 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. They moved to Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, where Bob began his career as an engineer with Alcoa. Bob was transferred to Lafayette, Indiana, and eventually to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of his projects included overseeing the transport of Alcoa aluminum panels for the exterior of the World Trade Center buildings. He had to inspect the panels before they were installed and would walk the floors of the World Trade Center before the exterior walls were in place. After 30 years with Alcoa, Bob took an early retirement so he and Essie could travel. Their travels took them to Europe several times and they loved touring the United States in their trailer. They especially enjoyed the western national parks and numerous trips with their family. They moved to Colorado in 1990 so they could be close to their daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters. His loving wife of 52 years, Essie, passed away in 2002. In 2007, he moved into Wind Crest Retirement Community. Bob was an avid skier until he was almost 81. He loved the outdoors, hiking in the mountains, biking, sightseeing, and swimming in the ocean. He was a talented artist, selling many of his slate etchings and scratch art at craft shows all over the country. He loved playing his harmonica and it didn’t take much coaxing to persuade him to play. He would often play it on the tour buses in Europe. Family was always a high priority and he loved being with all of them in any family activity. Bob was a true gentleman (gentle man) in every way and was respected by all who knew him. He has served in his churches as an Elder and on numerous committees. He was a member of Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Essie, parents, June and A. Logan Miller and sister, Miriam Wilson. He is survived by his daughter, Betsy (Jim) Wright, grandchildren, Jennifer Wright, Julie (Jake) Lanier, great grandson, Mason Lanier and sister, Fay Hammerschmitt.

Private interment.
