Obituary for A. Don Urben
Arlin Don Urben was born May 22, 1933, to John C. and Josepha S. (nee Thinglum) Urben in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and lived his youth and early school years near Canton, South Dakota on his parents’ farms. Don graduated from Augustana Academy at Canton, South Dakota in 1951 and from Augustana College at Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1955 majoring in Business Administration. Additional studies were completed through International Accountants Society, Chicago, Community College of Denver, Arapahoe Community College, Littleton, Colorado, and Jones College of Real Estate, Denver, Colorado.
Don met the love of his life on his first Sunday at church in Denver and his first week beginning in retail management training. After being transferred to central Washington he returned to Denver where he married Oneita Frances Dreier May 5, 1956, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Their marriage produced three children and four miscarriages.
Don’s business career spanned fifty-five years, twenty-six of which were with Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin). At one point Don transferred to NASA’s Marshall Michoud plant in New Orleans, Louisiana, as Chief Account. Upon returning to Denver, Don was a Finance Chief in Space Systems before retiring in 1989. His quest for his own business completed his working career for the next twenty years enjoying the last nine years as a broker associate.
Both Don and ‘Nita’ devoted much time to raising their family and church activities. They were both Bethel Bible Series Teachers. Don also served local congregations in leadership positions and synodical and national functions in management capacities.
Surviving Don are three children, Sherilyn Urben of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bret (Jeanette) Urben of Littleton, Colorado, and Allison (Erik) Jansson of Bailey, Colorado; his four grandchildren Michael Welton of Chicago, Illinois; Benjamin (Jennifer) Urben of Littleton, Colorado; Jared Urben of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Dawson Jansson of Bailey, Colorado; one great grandson Callen Urben of Littleton, Colorado; two nephews, niece, many cousins, and in-laws. Preceding Don in death are his wife Oneita, his parents, his brother Gerald, eleven aunts and uncles, a nephew, many cousins and a brother-in-law.
