Obituary for Jannie Mangrum
Mangrum, Jannie, was 94 years old at the time of her passing from this life on April 22, 2014. She died peacefully in her home with a few family members with her. Jannie was born October 21, 1919 in Antlers, Oklahoma. Her parents were James Franklin McKnight and Jenny Elizabeth Carroll. Jannie had a twin brother who died in childbirth and a sister 22 months older than her named Thelma McKnight Dillard. She grew up on a farm and often told the story that the day before her ninth birthday she had picked 90 pounds of cotton. She met Irven Mangrum through his sister, Vivian Mangrum, who was Jannie's teenage friend. Jannie and Irven were married a year later on September 28, 1940 in Porter, Oklahoma. Their first daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Pearl was born on the day of Jannie and Irven's first wedding anniversary and their first son, Johnny Irven (or Lee), was born on February 2, 1944. Their second daughter Sharon Kay was born June 15, 1951 followed by the births of son's Danny Ray and David Mark born on December 1, 1956 and April 13, 1960; respectively. Jannie and Irven moved from Tulsa to the 'Front Range' of Colorado in the early sixties where they raised their family served the church, and extended hospitality and kindness to neighbors, friends, and a multitude of 'folks' who considered it an honor to be a part of the 'extended' Mangrum family. Irven preceded Jannie to their home in heaven in June of 1989. Jannie is survived by all five of her children and their spouses: Betty and Joe Moss of Casper, Wyoming; Johnny and Barbara Mangrum of Loga Vista, Texas; Sharon and Darrel Blankenship of Crystal Springs, Mississippi; Danny and Karen Mangrum of Arvada, Colorado; and Mark Mangrum of Arvada, Colorado. Grandchildren include Kevin and Brenda Moss of O'Fallon, Missouri; Kerri and Roger Martin of Casper, Wyoming; Tina Mangrum of Loga Vista , Texas; Justin Blankenship of Purcell, Oklahoma; Destiny Mangrum of Jackson, Mississippi; and Taylor Mangrum, Isaac Mangrum, Matthew Mangrum, and James Mangrum of Arvada, Colorado. Great-Grandchildren include Carly, Kyle, Andrew, Adam, Alicia, and Bailey. Great-Great Grandchildren include Jayson, Kendall, and Jeremiah. In addition to her family, which she served so faithfully through the years, Jannie was a mother and grandmother figure to literally hundreds of people that benefited from her care, protection, provision, and wonderful sense of humor. Jannie was known for her southern cooking: beans and ham, corn bread, peach cobbler, fried okra, sweet tea and canned goods. Along with the hundreds of people in her family and 'extended family' came the hundreds of quarts of canned green beans she prepared and gave away every fall. Jannie always had room for guests at her table. She had a gift of remembering, she remembered the favorite dish of each guest and family member which she would serve, cooked to perfection. In addition, she remembered all of her guests by name and could recall conversations they had carried out in the past. In this way, she made everyone feel special. If you came to Jannie Mangrum's house you would leave with a full 'belly' and the feeling that you were cared for.
